Updated: Mar 21, 2023

We chatted with AJ Heister this week. AJ is like our jack of all trades here at the shop. He’s always willing to lend a hand and goes the extra mile to make sure we’re ready for the race. Get to know AJ a little better with his interview below:

Name: AJ Heister

Position: Shop Foreman / Fueler

Hometown: Maquoketa, Iowa

Years in racing: 17

Q: What is your favorite racing moment? A: I was working at JTG in 2014 when they got their first Cup Series win. That was really cool to be a part of and one of my favorite racing memories. Another favorite memory was being a part of the 2020 ARCA Menards Series Championship with Bret, that was special.

Q: What got you interested in working in racing? A: My dad always had a race car when I was growing up. I helped him out and really got interested in the sport.

Q: Who has had the greatest influence on you and your career? A: My dad.

Q: Where did you work before coming to BHR? A: I worked at JTG and RCR before coming over to BHR.

Q: What’s your favorite part about your job? A: I’m competitive, so I enjoy the competition the sport has to offer. I also like traveling and going to the race track.

Q: What is your favorite city to visit? A: Since I moved away from home, my favorite place to visit is my family back home in Maquoketa, Iowa. It’s a small town, but it’s home.

Q: What are your hobbies away from the shop? A: RC Racing. I have too many RC cars, probably 13 or 14 of them, but it’s fun. My son, he’s 9 years old, has gotten into it as well, so it’s fun to spend time with him at the RC track.

Q: What is your favorite restaurant to eat at on the road? A: I don’t really have a favorite place to eat when we travel. I’m just along for the ride and will go wherever the team decides to go.

Q: Would you rather be a tiny elephant or a giant hamster? A: I’d have to say a giant hamster.

Q: If you could have any superpower, what would it be? A: I’m going to go with being invisible. I’m a bigger guy, so I’m hard to miss. If I was invisible, people wouldn’t notice me.

Q: Do you have any superstitions? A: I don’t have any unlike a lot of people in racing.
